Not too action-oriented, but more exploring and seeing this world we grow.” Just a lot of back and forth with prototyping trying to find some mechanic that felt novel and we wanted the game to feel sort of relaxing too. Like a character transforming into a ball and rolling around the level, we had the Power Arm that’s shooting stuff, we had both absorbing and shooting wind gusts out of the Power Glove at some time. “We happened upon it in a lot of other mechanics we tried. An action-adventure game at its heart, The Gunk puts you in control of the bold and optimistic space explorer Rani, accompanied by her more cautious and serious partner Becks, as they land on. There was a lot of back and forth prototyping with the core gameplay mechanic of The Gunk as well. The characters as well, Rani and Becks, were ones that developed and grew into their own over time, with Elm remarking on how they like the idea that the characters represent the different aspects of you, the player. In the interview, Broqvist opens by explaining where the idea for The Gunk came from, and how it grew organically from a number of different prototypes.
